Product Details of Linksys SD2008 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Description

The 8-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch provides nonblocking, wire speed-switching for your 10, 100, and 1000 megabit network clients. Drop this switch in place of your current workgroup hub or switch, and you can upgrade your high-requirement workstations to full Gigabit speeds as necessary, while continuing to service other clients at their current speeds. Or build your network from the ground up, with appropriate link speeds for each user's requirements. Either way, it's perfect for graphics, multimedia, and other applications that have to move large files across the network quickly.

DO NOT BUY LINKSYS BRAND!

Strengths: Keeps economy going by forcing new purchases!

Weakness: High failure rate within 12-24 months. Some fail within weeks.

They start dropping data packets a few months into service and eventually fail completely. You will chase network errors for months trying to understand what is happening. I have added a picture of ten 5 and 8 port Gigabit switches that I have replaced in recent weeks. I threw away several times what is in the picture. I have used Linksys for over 7 years but never again! I now use Netgear...

Lockups a problem

Strengths: Metal case & nice looking

Weakness: Lockups

I bought 8 of these and have had failures and lockups on most of them. Usually unplugging it for 30 seconds will get it operational, but it should not lock up in the first place. If it were only 1 having a problem, it could be a bad unit, but all of them is an engineering problem. Even one of the replacements lock up. Replacement with Linksys is a real pain. They do everything possible to keep...

JohnR

Strengths: Small and fast

Weakness: ??? haven't found any yet

This is a very good switch and is doing a fine job. I have just purchased 2 more. I do NOT consider the fan to be noisy, actually haven't even noticed it. NO uplink cable is needed and I found the directions to be adequate, but totally unnecessary - just plug it in.

Linksys SD2008 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

This is a good switch. It's too bad the above review didn't realize that no crossover cable is needed. Most new switches and all (AFAIK) gigabit switches have autodetect ports that work with straight- or crossover cables automatically.

Linksys SD2008 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Strengths: Does the job okay.

Weakness: Unbelievably noisy fan.

Unbelievably noisy fan. A small, desktop switch should not need ANY fan. This unit has a fan which is noisier than any full-height tower PC that I've owned! What were their engineers thinking of?? Furthermore, the instructions are horrific. There is no "uplink" button and they leave you to your own devices that you have to use a crossover cable (NOT supplied) if you want to hook it up to your DSL...

Great but does not last too long

Strengths: Great speed

Weakness: Overheating shortens its life

I had this unit for over 3 years and as long as it worked it was great. I used it within a home office network with mixed 100 and 1Gbps connections. Computers running on 1Gbps they really transferred files at this speed (some do not understand that in some cases computers are not able to transfer at such a speed). In spite of some reviews, I do not think this unit has any fan inside, at least I...

1000 only for a while

Strengths: uh, lights?

Weakness: lost the Gig-E functionality early

Don't buy this if you're counting on having 1000 megabit for very long. If Gig-E doesn't mean anything to you, you probably wouldn't be looking at this product anyway.

Linksys SD2008 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Strengths: VERY FAST LITTLE SWITCH

Weakness: still looking :-)

Having used high switches like CISCO and 3Com. I find this baby switch to be very good on performance. We've used it in our lab to clone machine and the speed is amazing. WOuld recommend to anyone

Is Your Linksys SD2008 Switch Overheating or Losing Connectivity?

The Linksys SD2008 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit switch has been around since 2004 and is one of the most popular and widely available switches on the market. Many owners have noticed that the Linksys SD2008 version 2.x switches have been failing after several months of use. Our Linksys SD2008 switch also started having issues recently and we replaced it with a version 3.0 switch and the problems were...

8 Port Gigabit Switch Roundup

As long-time readers of our reviews know, we don't generally review or test Ethernet adapters and unmanaged switches. The reason for this is that I'm a firm believer that these are commodity products, to be purchased based on price, brand preference and perhaps warranty.
